Anti-Spyware
Spybot Search & Destroy (FREE)
What a brilliant spyware removal tool, this little beauty is packed full of utilities to safely remove unwanted junk off your system.
This is the
only spyware software which can immunize internet explorer by preventing you from going to known harmful sites.
The only bad thing I can say about Spybot is that you have to manually do updates and checks yourself, though this is simple to do and can easily be performed once a week, which I recommend.

Malware Bytes Anti Malware (FREE)
If you've got malware that simply refuses to uninstall, this is the only software that hasn't let me down.
Spybot does have a lot of nifty tools etc. but I've found that Spybot struggles on the tricky malware whereas Malware Bytes always kills it off.

Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition (FREE)
I have recently found myself returning to the usage of Avast Free Home Edition due to it now coming with a free Anti-Spyware side.
I soon found out that this anti-virus has got to be the best free one on the internet.
The updates are very regular, even as regular as a few times a day!
It automatically handles incoming and outgoing email and is easy to add to any software that supports virus scanning, especially handy if you are a P2P (Peer To Peer) user that downloads lots of things though file sharing networks.
You do need to do a yearly re-registration, but for personal use, it is totally free.

Firewall
Windows Firewall
What! I hear you say.
Yep, the easiest, cheapest and most reliable firewall out there, has to be
Windows Firewall the one which is built into Microsoft Windows.
The Windows firewall is pretty intelligent and won't annoy you unless it thinks anything is a pretty big threat to your system, unlike 3
rd party firewalls that need to learn a great deal more and generally consider anything that accesses the internet for the first time a threat, which is way over protective and pretty silly really!
Unlike 3
rd party firewalls, Windows firewall doesn't seems to interfere with your networking when you are trying to set one up, unlike the 3
rd party ones where I've found I've either had to disable the firewall, or edit the advanced rule settings and create an access path for the networks I wanted to set up, which considering networking is a fidget to start with, is not helpful in the slightest when you want to get things up and running quickly for a company that might be losing money by the second!
Full PC Security
BullGuard Internet Security
This is the
only full internet security system I would personally pay for.
It packs more security than
McAfee and
Norton put together.
BullGuard also has a
Gamers Edition which has been recoded for better gaming performance and security.
Updates are very regular and usually fast to do with a good internet connection.
BullGuard is better for the smaller PC market with it's smaller memory footprint, which allows BullGuard to function on PC's with lower memory specifications which can't be said for
McAfee and
Norton which are basically bloatware.
If you have a problem with BullGuard and you are still able to access the internet, you can chat to a real live person via their built in chat utility where you can ask questions and get great answers.
I've used their online chat support for a clients problems and got sorted out within 30 mins.
You do have to pay for BullGuard, but we sell it at a special
OEM price of
£24.00p including VAT. (RRP
£44.99p [12/11/2009])
