When I do a full service, I always carry out the following procedures...
- Deletion of unnecessary temporary files
- Deletion of redundant registry entries
- Malware scan of the system
- Virus scan of the system1
- Defragmentation of the system
- Physical cleaning of the internal workings of the PC system2
1 Only if the system is suspected of being infected with a virus, then a full virus scan will be activated.
2 If there is a substantial amount of contamination within the system, then I will try to clean all internal areas of the PC system, this includes dismantling of the fans where possible etc.
Below are some pictures to illustrate the importance of keeping your PC regularily serviced both digitally and physically...
CPU stripping and cleaning
|
This is a reasonably good example of how bad a CPU fan can get.
The cooling fins which are metal strips underneath the fan are nearly completely blocked!
These cooling fins should be completely clear to allow the air coming from the CPU fan to pass through and remove unwanted heat which is generated from the CPU.
If these cooling fins become blocked then the air doesn't pass through the cooling fins which in turn then allows the CPU to overheat to a point where it becomes unstable, shuts down to protect itself or worse becomes damaged beyond repair.

This is the same fan as above, but after it has been stripped and serviced by me.
As you can now see, the fins are easily visible and free from any build up.

GPU stripping and cleaning
|
This is an example of a dirty GPU fan, these fans are located on your videocard to keep it's GPU (graphical processing unit) cool.
Only problem is that usually you can't see the internals of the GPU fan unless you take it out.
Glancing from the side doesn't show how dirty it is in the centre and this is a prime example as it looked perfectly fine when looking into the system when it was still plugged in.
The signs that could indicate that the GPU fan is not working or blocked is when you use graphically challenging things like games, and it crashes usually only in games, then this may be the problem.

The same fan from above, now you can see the cooling fins underneath the fan of the GPU, one happy videocard again. :)

System stripping and cleaning

Here's a prime candidate to show how dirty the inside of your computer can get if you have animals, a lot of people living at your location, smoking etc.
As you can see by the picture the hard drive (located near the bottom of the case) is completely covered in dust, in fact so much so that you can only see the black side of it.

And here is the same system from above, totally cleaned out and you can now see the silver/white top of the hard drive and the cables are much cleaner.
